Hi everyone

First of all wonderful site

I am after a bit of advice regarding buying a telescope for my boyfriend. All he said is he is after a telescope not of any description at all.

For a beginner would you recommend this one i have seen?

http://www.jessops.com/Store/s28712/523-167/Binoculars--and--Scopes/Telescopes/Celestron/Firstscope-114EQ-Short-Motor-Telescope/details.aspx

The product detail states:

This version of the 114mm (4½in.) Newtonian telescope offers more portability than the standard longer tube Newtonian without sacrificing power or performance. The short tube of this model is only 18" long and has a built-in correction lens, giving it all the focal length of the standard model, while reducing aberrations.

The equatorial mount is quite stable, with setting circles and slow motion controls on both axes for easy, smooth tracking.

Specifications:
114mm (4.5") Reflector
1000mm Focal Length, f/9
CG-2 Equatorial Mount with Setting Circles and Slow Motion Adjustment Cables
Sturdy Adjustable Aluminum Tripod with Accessory Tray
Telescope Weight: Approximately 7.25Kg

Standard Accessories:
1-1/4" 20mm (50x), 10mm (100x) Eyepieces
StarPointer Finderscope
Equatorial Mount
The Sky L1 CD ROM

The main question is will he be able to see clearly and know what he was looking at. Apologies if i sound a bit stupid.

Many thanks

Hi Emma, buying a first scope for yourself is difficult enough but buying one for someone else is harder.
The first question i would ask is what does he want to use it for  (planetry or deep sky)
and the second is how much do you want to pay.
The telescope you looked at is not a bad make.
I would suggest bringing your boyfriend up to Pex Hill (our observatory) on a wednesday night or come to one of our sidewalk events where there will be plenty of scopes on display. Our next event is tomorrow (22/02/08) in ainsdale or we have one next month at Croxteth hall.

Hi Martin

Many thanks for your swift reply.
To be honest i am not sure what he wants to look at other than into the night sky.
I would say up to £200 if possible maybe a bit more. I need it for July so there is no rush.
Could you give me directions to Pax hill and more information and dates of the Croxteth hall event.

What would you be able to see through the one that i posted a link too?

Once again many thanks for your reply, much appreciated

Hi Emma, you would be able to see quite a bit in that telescope but it is a bit overpriced, you can get a 6" reflector from stockport binocular cheaper, with a larger mirror you can see more.

here are details of Pex Hill and the Croxteth eventshttp://www.liverpoolas.org/content/view/18/37/

One of our members John Naylor is selling some good scopes on the classified ads. on this site, these are good scopes and you would be getting more scope for your moneyhttp://www.liverpoolas.org/component/option,com_adsmanager/page,show_ad/adid,6/catid,1/Itemid,55/

Many thanks for your advice.
Just having a search through the Stockport telescope centre website now and this has caught my eye

http://www.telescopesandbinoculars.co.uk/acatalog/MAGAZINE_OFFERS.html

Would that pic that it is showing of the moon be accurate with that size lens etc?

Sorry to go on, but i wont be here for his birthday i shall be in America for a few months so i want this to be extra special for him.

Thanks

Hi Emma, yes that is correct, the moon would nearly fill the field of view in a 25mm eyepiece. This is a shorter focal length than the one from Jessops so it will be better for galaxies and nebula but still good on the moon and planets.
