I have to-day joined The Liverpool Astronomical Society website. Over many years, i have taken a casual interest in the planets and stars. And have been fascinated with everything concerning astronomy. Every day i look on computer web sites for information for what is visible in the night sky, with the naked eye. Then i go out into my garden hoping to see something.
I live in Widnes, and is it possible to attend Pex Hill on a wednesday to find out what goes on, and possibly observe.
I have no telescope or any equipment at home. Very little knowledge about astronomy but a great interest.
yours sincerely

Hello Brenden,
Thankyou for replying to my post, and your kind invitation.
I am looking forward to going up to Pex Hill on a clear Wednesday evening. Just like to comment on how good and informative BBC 2 recent programme with professer Brian Cox was.

Hi all,

I thought I would reply to the last post about the Stargazing Live program.
I thought they missed a great chance to introduce people to astronomy,it was like watching the series Universe.
They should have concentrated more on backyard astronomy, explaining more about telescopes and binoculars, what you can actually see with different instuments. All to often people buy scopes with colourful pictures on the box and are disappointed with the results and give up.Jonathan Ross said he did not know how to set up his celestron nexstar, did we see him get help?the simple answer was no, and thats the problem.Maybe the LAS can make tuturial DVDS on setting up equatorial mounts and gotos. What do people think?

Nice idea Paul but I think it is better in person, we are only to happy to help people get the best out of their telescope and I think this is best done one to one.
cheers

I agree with Brendan with the 1 to 1 approach although I am not totally against tutorial videos and have often used YouTube and Andy's Shot Glass articles on his website
http://www.andysshotglass.com/articles.html

Maybe we could do something during the spring and put it on YouTube.

I agree with Paul on this.
I thought the program was lacking in explaining how to get  started on the hobby there was very little explanation as what to buy? and I really wish they would'nt show these fantastic pictures of other galaxies as you dont see that at all. I was very dissapointed when I first looked through my telescope because I expected all those colours in the Orion nebula but thanks to Paul explaining things to me I am now really enjoying it.
Why cant the LAS have a night solely for beginners and explain things to us. Come on share your experience with us beginners I would be happy to pay for such a night. You might end up with quite a few more members as well.

Hi Kenny/Paul, every Wednesday we are open to the public, this evening we had 4 people who brought their new telescopes up and we showed them how to set them up and get the best out of them. we will do this any Wednesday or even at one of our sidewalk events, we are only to happy to do this for no reward other than seeing people enjoy the wonderfull world of astronomy

Hello Brendan and Dave,
Many thanks for responding to my post. The reason for posting was that people I come across can't get to Pex Hill or would not carry scopes on buses or trains to the sidewalk events.I think sometimes we who have cars forget those that don't. I would bring them myself but my job mostly stops me attending Weds, sidewalks and meetings.Anyhow thanks for taking the time to respond.
Dave,my brother logs on and gets me,it must be the surname but he recieves the E-Mails and I don't,now that is strange  Cheesy
