Hello all,

I am fairly new to Astronomy and I have been given a Skywatcher 130p for my birthday.  I was out with it last night and managed to track Saturn and Mars.  I only have the basic eyepieces that came with the scope and I was hoping to get some advice on some decent eyepieces for viewing both planets and galaxies.  The eyepieces I have are 10mm, 25mm wide angle and the 2x barlow lens.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi Pauline, eyepieces are a fairly emotive subject as there are so many to choose from  and ranging in prices from £30 to £500, my advice is, if you are able, to bring your scope up to our observatory one Wednesday evening when the weather is clear and try some eyepieces out and see what ones suit both your telescope and your pocket. You do get some second hand pieces for sale on this site

Pauline,

I too am new to astronomy and have the Skywatcher 1300.   The two eyepieces and the Barlow give you the choice of four magnifications up to 260x.   What more could you want ?  I reckon it will be a long time before I need anything else.

Why spend any more money ?

Pauline,
My apologies.  The figure 260x is wrong.  The four magnifications we have in our Skywatcher 1300 are -

The 25mm eyepiece gives magnification 36x, and the Barlow doubles this to 72x.  The 10mm eyepiece gives 90x, and the Barlow doubles it to 180x.

Up to now I am comfortable with 36x and 72x.  Not had much success yet with 90x.   The narrower field of view takes some getting used to.   Haven't even tried the 180x.

Thanks for the advice and the website Brendan.  I'll try and come up on a clear weds (weather is rubbish the past week or so...)

I have used the eyepieces pretty successfully (though I think this was just luck and perseverance).  Took a lot of messing and calibrating but I managed to see Saturn through all the eye pieces.  The 10mm eyepiece is harder to get things in to view but well worth it!  I just watched Saturn moving across my view for most of the evening.  It was a fantastic first go.  I would like to know more about what I can see with the different eyepieces.  I may have to visit on a weds and have a go and see what the differences are.  There is so much to learn! I’m also looking for a new eyepiece. I’m after a 2” wide field eyepiece, for my 10” Newtonian Reflector (Focal Length:  1200mm F/4.7 Parabola) I would like to use it for both near Earth, as well as deep space, objects.

Is there any advice anyone can give me about which would be the best eyepiece for this telescope and where the best place to buy one from is? They do appear to be pretty expensive items, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Dave.
