Best wishes to you all Mike. You will be the one with the big grin on your face and the bags under your eyes.
32  General Chat / Main Site Article Discussions / Re: Syllabus on: 30-Aug-2011 20:39:59 BST
James, I have now added the new syllabus to the site and it is visible from the front page menu.
The first meeting of the session is Friday 16th September. This is the Presidential Address and, knowing Ken, it will  be astronomically interesting and amusing! The meeting will be short and followed by the buffet. Tickets are available at the meeting and cost (if I recall correctly) £3.50
The buffet gives everybody the chance to chill and get to know each other better, chat about any projects or what ever takes your fancy.
I will check the ticket price and correct if it is different from the suggested £3.50

I have resized the image from the original 2907 x 2304,
1.96 Mb file down to 590 x 468,  125 KB. This is is then opened on this site using attach and browse buttton.

Right now I need to learn how to reduce the size of the image but keep the resolution !

Happy birthday (to come) Austin, nice prezzie.
Is the OIII for visual use, I have never observed with one of these so I would be interested if you bring it to Pex Hill, :-)

And poor Brendan has had to sleep on a hard floor since he gave up his rolled up mat :-(

43  General Chat / General Discussion / Re: Space shuttle launch Friday-from Liverpool! on: 09-May-2011 23:03:32 BST
The latest report says that Endeavour is scheduled for lift off from Kennedy Space Centre, Cape Canaveral, Florida., next Monday at 8:56 a.m. EDT (1256 GMT) of course that will be 13:56 BST on our clocks in the U.K. We should be able to watch the launch on NASA t.v.
44  General Chat / General Discussion / Re: Light Pollution! on: 03-May-2011 16:53:20 BST
Hi Kirk, Light Pollution Filters work  by filtering out the troublesome wavelengths such as the orange low pressure sodium street lights or the bright pink/white high pressure sodium. This helps to enhance the fainter objects giving a better contrast but, to be honest, I think that you may be fighting a losing battle with the airport and surrounding industrial units. Why not come up to the observatory and have a chat, with other more experienced observers then myself, and perhaps if it is clear you could try out some of the filters that we use to see through our local light pollution.
Of course if all else fails you could always become a lunar and solar observer. :-)

No Launch Attempt Monday, Teams to Replace APU Heater Power Box
Sun, 01 May 2011 03:01:10 PM GMT

Technicians and engineers at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida are narrowing in on the likely source of what caused heaters on a fuel line for space shuttle Endeavour’s auxiliary power unit-1 (APU-1) to fail on Friday and scrubbing the first launch attempt for the STS-134 mission. But because of work associated with fixing the problem, launch teams will not be able to make a launch attempt tomorrow. Teams will meet Monday and are expected to determine a new “no earlier than” next launch attempt for Endeavour at that time.     MORE.....
