1  Astronomical Equipment / Help and Advice / Celestron Powerseeker 40AZ on ebuyer.com on: 07-Jan-2012 10:10:04 GMT
Hi all,
Just thought I'd let you know that ebuyer.com are currently doing the Celestron Powerseeker 40AZ for £32.99 inc. VAT, down from £50.
I don't know if this is a good price or if the 'scope is decent, but thought I'd post it here in case anyone's looking for that model and has been quoted higher.
According to the bumf it's a 40mm refractor.

2  General Chat / General Discussion / Re: clouds on: 13-Feb-2011 19:47:05 GMT
I'm not a meteorologist but I'd suspect it may be to do with the way the land and sea re-emit the heat (what little there currently is of it!) that they absorb during the day.
I know that the sea is generally warmer than the land at night, as the land cools down quite quickly once the sunlight stops heating it whereas the sea cools more slowly.
Being near the coast is probably also a big factor. My guess is it'd be something to do with the moist air coming in from above the sea combined with the relative temperature difference  Undecided

4  Website Issues / Comments and Suggestions / Re: What would you like to see on the website? on: 03-Nov-2007 17:16:31 GMT
Hi all,

Just wondering if the website should have:

1. specific interest groups eg lunar, solar, space etc with the email address of members with an interest; to share and develop knowledge and expertise.

2. list of courses, with comments from people who have taken the course.

I am currently taking the JMU ARI  ' Universe through a Large Telescope ' course and both of the above would have been/be useful to me.

Regards

Brian

Hi Brian,
With regards to the specific interests, the forums already have sections for discussion of these (though it's not very clear until you actually click in. Have a gander at the Solar System board on the main forum index and you should see it has "child boards" with specific interest groups)
If there're areas missing (e.g. asteroid photography) then we can add those if desired.

The idea about courses is a good one too.

I have often pondered about visiting your observatory and maybe joining your society. My knowledge of the subject isnt great although my enthusiasm for it is. I googled your website and whilst browsing it noticed you had an astrophotography section, unfortunately it is empty. It would be great if it was populated with images from your 12" meade or even those captured by your members.

Hi Ian,
I see Dave's already replied re: the Astrophotography section.
I'll try and rally the relevant people to see if we can come up with some articles such as best practice, pitfalls, etc.
For actual images there's the gallery here: http://www.liverpoolas.org/gallery/
although it's still a little bare itself at the moment.
Astrophotography from people on the site is welcome too

Hi all,
Now that the new site has been up and running for a while, what sort of things would you be interested in seeing on the LAS website?
Are there any areas where you find it lacking, or think could be done better?

The team and I would be interested to hear your thoughts. At this stage this is only information-gathering, but if key areas are identified we can look at addressing these to make your experience on here better (I sound like a manager don't I? Too many meetings at work! Grin)

Regards
Mark,

12  General Chat / General Discussion / Re: Liverpool Meteorite on: 06-Dec-2006 00:53:29 GMT
Hi Frank, welcome to the site.
Have you any more info to narrow things down? e.g. was it particularly bright, or did it have a colour to it?
It's possible there would have been several bright meteors in that time period
13  General Chat / General Discussion / Re: light pollution on: 02-Dec-2006 17:59:30 GMT
Just out of curiosity, I've put a poll up for people to indicate how light pollution affects them.
You can see the results so far by clicking here.
