167  Astronomical Equipment / Help and Advice / Re: Help regarding buying a first time telescope.. thanks on: 22-Feb-2008 16:53:00 GMT
Hi Emma, yes that is correct, the moon would nearly fill the field of view in a 25mm eyepiece. This is a shorter focal length than the one from Jessops so it will be better for galaxies and nebula but still good on the moon and planets.
168  Astronomical Equipment / Help and Advice / Re: Help regarding buying a first time telescope.. thanks on: 22-Feb-2008 15:19:10 GMT
Hi Emma, you would be able to see quite a bit in that telescope but it is a bit overpriced, you can get a 6" reflector from stockport binocular cheaper, with a larger mirror you can see more.

here are details of Pex Hill and the Croxteth eventshttp://www.liverpoolas.org/content/view/18/37/
http://www.liverpoolas.org/content/view/10/18/

One of our members John Naylor is selling some good scopes on the classified ads. on this site, these are good scopes and you would be getting more scope for your moneyhttp://www.liverpoolas.org/component/option,com_adsmanager/page,show_ad/adid,6/catid,1/Itemid,55/
169  Astronomical Equipment / Help and Advice / Re: Help regarding buying a first time telescope.. thanks on: 21-Feb-2008 22:23:39 GMT
Hi Emma, buying a first scope for yourself is difficult enough but buying one for someone else is harder.
The first question i would ask is what does he want to use it for  (planetry or deep sky)
and the second is how much do you want to pay.
The telescope you looked at is not a bad make.
I would suggest bringing your boyfriend up to Pex Hill (our observatory) on a wednesday night or come to one of our sidewalk events where there will be plenty of scopes on display. Our next event is tomorrow (22/02/08) in ainsdale or we have one next month at Croxteth hall.

171  General Chat / General Discussion / Re: What did i see in the sky last night? on: 15-Feb-2008 22:40:31 GMT
Hi Oonagh, you can occasionally see an Aurora from this far south but conditions have to be just right, so keep your fingers crossed.
172  General Chat / General Discussion / Re: What did i see in the sky last night? on: 13-Feb-2008 12:51:23 GMT
Hi Oonagh, what you saw was more than likely a meteor, most meteors are cometry debris and very small, frequently larger pieces  of debris fall to earth, tons of debris are falling each day, this particular piece may have come off an asteroid or even left over debris from the formation of the solar system, your quite lucky there are lots of people who have never seen a meteor (shooting star) let alone anything larger.
173  Events / Sidewalk Astronomy / A Belated Report From Kelling Heath Autumn Star Party on: 07-Feb-2008 14:51:17 GMT
KELLING HEATH STAR PARTY

Thursday 13/09/07. Myself, Geoff Regan and Dave Owen set up camp in the yellow field, I had brought my ten-inch Orion Intelliscope. After getting some provisions in, we went walkabout to look at some of the scopes. There where quit a lot of scopes on view and the owners were only to pleased to talk about them. Two particular scopes took Dave and Geoffs interest, a 12-inch binocular scope belonging to Bolton A.S. and a twenty-inch f3.7 dobs. Early in the evening Dave Bentley and John Leek arrived, they were staying in a B and B about twenty miles away. Unfortunately it was cloudy in the evening so a game of cards and copious amounts of liquid refreshment ensued.

Friday 14/09/07. The day started off quite cloudy again so we went to see some of the local attractions and towns. By seven-o-clock in the evening the sky started to clear and shortly after sunset we were able to view Jupiter low in the south-west by twilight the sky had cleared up nicely and the milkyway was starting to become visible the next five hours were incredible as one target after another was viewed my favourite of the evening being ngc6992 and ngc6960 the veil nebula, I have had great difficulty spotting this from Pex Hill but was blown away by the structure I could see. We spent most of the night viewing familiar objects because some of us had never seen them so clear before, objects like m31, m33, m27 m110 and so on (below is an incomplete list of objects viewed, I can’t remember all) also the amount you could see in 10x50 binoculars was incredible.

Saturday 15/09/07. This day started early due to the trade stands setting up and waking me up (I’m not complaining though). There were quite a few Trade stands and a few car boot stalls, which afforded some bargains. It was a nice sunny and relaxing day, much needed after previous nights gazing, I did not go to any of the organized talks (to lazy). The evening started off like the previous evening, clear and transparent, and a good session started, but by two in the morning everyone was extremely tired and called it a day. My one big impression of the evening was seeing a dust lane in m31 through binoculars.

Sunday 16/09/07. The morning was spent casually packing up and I left about two in the afternoon.
My overall view of the star party was, a round trip of 500 miles that was worth every second, the Kelling Heath Holiday park was very good, the toilet block had under floor heating and was very clean, the bar meals were good value and the on site store had a fairly good selection, but like all these on site stores a little bit expensive. I have already booked the same pitch for next year so here’s hoping for clear skies.

176  Observing & Imaging / Cometary / Re: Comet 17p/holmes on: 29-Oct-2007 19:59:41 GMT
Hi Al, there are a few clusters in perseus (ngc869 the double cluster), the comet looks more like a planetary nebulae, the comet makes up a triangle with Mirfak and delta persei, http://www.spaceweather.com/images2007/24oct07/skymap_north_holmes.gif?PHPSESSID=ms3enrcvrprhaidjmjnn6ll2g3
Nobody knows for certain why it flared, but this is the second time it has done this.

Hi Mike, unfortunateley the next time the ISS is visible from Liverpool is on the 6th of November at 06.41am here is a link which gives ISS passes amongst other thingshttp://www.heavens-above.com/main.aspx?Loc=Liverpool&Lat=53.416&Lng=-2.940&Alt=10&TZ=GMT
178  Observing & Imaging / Cometary / Comet 17p/holmes on: 25-Oct-2007 12:38:58 BST
Comet 17p/holmes which is normally a low magnitude comet has suddenly flared to 3rd magnitude is visible to the naked eye at the moment. It can be seen in Perseus below Cassiopeia here is a link to a sky maphttp://spaceweather.com/images2007/24oct07/skymap_north_holmes.gif?PHPSESSID=fmdm99obfg86u5f8kfm5u42oa1
lets hope for clear skys
