Hi Phil, welcome to our site and welcome to astronomy, ask as many questions as you like thats what we are here for. A good observing site on the Wirral is the country park at Thurstaston, we do an event there most years so keep your Eye out for when the next one is and join us there.

A 7th mag. Nova was Discovered in Cygnus on 10th april 2008by in Japan it is said to be still brightening. it can be observed (through the clouds  Wink) about one third of the way between Albireo and Sadr. RA 19-43-0 DEC +32-19. It does mean getting up in the early hours but could be wll worth losing sleep over.

20  Astronomical Equipment / Help and Advice / Re: What will i see with this... on: 26-Mar-2008 12:48:16 UTC
Hi Andy, the shorter focal length is better for deep sky but will sufice for moon and planetary, the longer focal length, if catadioptic will have a lense in the focuser  ( so as to increase focal length) this can have its own problems. The motorised scope can still be used manually, one of the benefits is you can easily stay on what your viewing as once aligned it should keep the target in the eyepiece (ideal for imaging).
see you soon

Hi Andy, you will be able to see the moon in close up and saturn, jupiter etc. you will also see nebula's and other deep sky objects. The only drawback I can see with this scope is it may be a catadioptic which can be hell to colomate, if you can go an extra £15 Stockport Binocular do the same telescope with a shorter focul length with drive motors for £165 (a better scope). I would  sugest holding off buying your first scope until you have been to Pex Hill and had a talk to a few people about the pros and cons of different types of scope (you will be able to try a few types up there, weather permitting). There is nothing worse than spending good money on a scope only to be dissapointed with the views.
see you soon

Hi Andy, The cost of joining the society is £15 per year, there are many benefits to joining the society, but what I would sugest both of you to come up to Pex Hill on a wednesday evening meet everyone (all very friendly) and have a chat, benefits in joining the society are to many to mention here, but if you check out our Syllabus on this site you will see just a small part of the benefits.
we look forward to seeing you at Pex

29  Astronomical Equipment / Help and Advice / Re: Help regarding buying a first time telescope.. thanks on: 22-Feb-2008 16:53:00 UTC
Hi Emma, yes that is correct, the moon would nearly fill the field of view in a 25mm eyepiece. This is a shorter focal length than the one from Jessops so it will be better for galaxies and nebula but still good on the moon and planets.
30  Astronomical Equipment / Help and Advice / Re: Help regarding buying a first time telescope.. thanks on: 22-Feb-2008 15:19:10 UTC
Hi Emma, you would be able to see quite a bit in that telescope but it is a bit overpriced, you can get a 6" reflector from stockport binocular cheaper, with a larger mirror you can see more.

here are details of Pex Hill and the Croxteth eventshttp://www.liverpoolas.org/content/view/18/37/

One of our members John Naylor is selling some good scopes on the classified ads. on this site, these are good scopes and you would be getting more scope for your moneyhttp://www.liverpoolas.org/component/option,com_adsmanager/page,show_ad/adid,6/catid,1/Itemid,55/
