3  Astronomical Equipment / Help and Advice / Re: Advice needed for a Newbie regarding a telescope on: 17-Nov-2008 12:29:33 UTC
Hi Michael, for imaging you will need to spend a lot of money  Angry  you can get some half decent images from a Driven telescope.
For deep space observing you need large aperture, bigger the mirror the more photons you can grab personally i would always go for a Dobsonian but these are not so good for imaging. call up to Pex Hill and we can show you various setups.

Hi Michael, Stockport Binocular have a good chioce for under £200, here is a links http://www.telescopesandbinoculars.co.uk/acatalog/NewtonianReflectors.html the £155 would probably suit you best.

6  Astronomical Equipment / Help and Advice / Re: Skyliner 300P 12" Parabolic on: 13-Nov-2008 00:27:04 UTC
Hi Vincent, one of our members has the 10" version of this scope and it is  a very good scope. The only way you will get better at that price is secondhand. Lets hope you get clear skies so you can use it  Wink.

8  Events / Young Astronomers / Re: group for young people on: 05-Nov-2008 10:47:21 UTC
Hi Joann, I don't actually know of any clubs for young astronomers but we do encourage young people to join our society, we have a small junior membership which we are activeley trying to increase. The age at which you can become a member has just been lowered to 10. We are looking into having an evening at Pex Hill just for junior members in the near future if we get enough members. Membership is £5 annually. I would recommend that you pop into Pex Hill one Wednesday evening where we could show yourself and your daughter around and have a chat, we are open to the public every Wednesday from 7-0-clock in the evening or come to one of our sidewalk events, there is one on Friday at Stadt Moers park in Huyton. Even if your daughter is younger than 10 you are still more than welcome to bring her along to Pex Hill.

9  Astronomical Equipment / Help and Advice / Re: hi help on this telescope on: 02-Nov-2008 19:56:30 UTC
Hi Mark, I always recommend people call up to our observatory at Pex Hill and have a chat before buying a telescope. This way we can talk and see where your interests lie and we can show you different types of scope and find what suits you best. We are open every Wednesday to the public from 7-0-clock in the evening.

10  Astronomical Equipment / Help and Advice / Re: hi help on this telescope on: 29-Oct-2008 12:49:37 UTC
Hi there, my first telescope was the Seben 6", I found it to be a fairly good telescope although collimation was critical with it being catadioptric. It was a good telescope for the Moon and planets but not brilliant on deep sky objects due to its long focul length. The mount is not brilliant it could be sturdier, but for the money they are a good starter scope.
cheers

14  Astronomical Equipment / Help and Advice / Re: Making My own Dobs on: 13-Jul-2008 18:37:42 UTC
Hi Michael, making your own mirror can be tricky and time consuming but as you say its a lot cheaper than buying one. There are a few members who make there own mirrors in fact they are making three 20" mirrors at the moment. I would suggest you come up to Pex Hill one wednesday evening and chat to Dave Owen and Geoff Regan as they will be able to give you the best advice. good luck

Hi Phil, welcome to our site and welcome to astronomy, ask as many questions as you like thats what we are here for. A good observing site on the Wirral is the country park at Thurstaston, we do an event there most years so keep your Eye out for when the next one is and join us there.
