Title: What would you like to see on the website?
Post by: Mark on 21-Aug-2007 21:19:52 UTC
Hi all,
Now that the new site has been up and running for a while, what sort of things would you be interested in seeing on the LAS website?
Are there any areas where you find it lacking, or think could be done better?

The team and I would be interested to hear your thoughts. At this stage this is only information-gathering, but if key areas are identified we can look at addressing these to make your experience on here better (I sound like a manager don't I? Too many meetings at work! ;D)

Regards
Mark,
LAS Website Admin Team

Hi Mark,
What about a forecast from Metcheck for the observatory coordinates, or just Liverpool generally? I've noticed on their website, they say you can add Metcheck "stickies" to your own website for free.
I always check the LAS website and the astronomy section of Metcheck everyday after work to see if its gonna be worth lugging the scope out of the shed!

Hi Alex,
Excellent idea :-)

Sounds like a good idea although I, and others, prefer the Met Office for accuracy. Perhaps we could have links for both.  ;D

I have often pondered about visiting your observatory and maybe joining your society. My knowledge of the subject isnt great although my enthusiasm for it is. I googled your website and whilst browsing it noticed you had an astrophotography section, unfortunately it is empty. It would be great if it was populated with images from your 12" meade or even those captured by your members.

Hi Ian, I have a few images taken through the 12" and will do my best  to get them on the site asap. In the meanwhile try and get up to Pex Hill, Leighton Observatory and get to know the gang. You don't need a scope just the enthusiasm.
Regards from Dave Galvin.

Hi all,

Just wondering if the website should have:

1. specific interest groups eg lunar, solar, space etc with the email address of members with an interest; to share and develop knowledge and expertise.

2. list of courses, with comments from people who have taken the course.

I am currently taking the JMU ARI  ' Universe through a Large Telescope ' course and both of the above would have been/be useful to me.

Regards

Brian

Hi Brian,
With regards to the specific interests, the forums already have sections for discussion of these (though it's not very clear until you actually click in. Have a gander at the Solar System board on the main forum index and you should see it has "child boards" with specific interest groups)
If there're areas missing (e.g. asteroid photography) then we can add those if desired.

The idea about courses is a good one too.

Hi Ian,
I see Dave's already replied re: the Astrophotography section.
I'll try and rally the relevant people to see if we can come up with some articles such as best practice, pitfalls, etc.
For actual images there's the gallery here: http://www.liverpoolas.org/gallery/
although it's still a little bare itself at the moment.
Astrophotography from people on the site is welcome too

Hi - first time post.

I'm not a member but have just emailed regarding when your next meeting is and coming along...

One thing I think would be particularly useful (that doesn't seem to be on any other sites I've visited) is a Dark Skies section where you can list the best places in Merseyside in terms of light pollution and which areas of Merseyside other members recommend.

Hello everyone :)
